چکیده

To determine the role of surface tension-driven melt migration in planetary bodies, we investigated the effect of static annealing on the evolution of melt-rich bands in partially molten samples. In shear deformation experiments, deviatoric stress causes melt to segregate; when the stress is removed, surface tension causes the melt to relax back to a homogeneous distribution. Samples composed of 76 vol.% olivine + 20 vol.% chromite + 4 vol.% MORB were deformed to shear strains of ~3.5 at 1523 K, 300 MPa and shear stresses of 20 to 55 MPa. After deformation, the samples were statically annealed for 0, 10, or 100 h. During annealing, melt transport driven by surface tension occurs, but takes place much more slowly than flow driven by deviatoric stress. Finite difference numerical simulations were performed of surface tension-driven melt flow resisted by viscous deformation of the olivine matrix. These models best reproduce the distribution of melt in the annealed samples when the solid viscosity ηs=1.7±0.5×10 12 Pa s with n=2.4±0.3 and b=9000±1900 in the expression for permeability κ=φd /b where d is grain size. The large value of b compared with estimates from geometrical models is probably due to clogging of the melt tubes by the secondary solid phase (chromite). Redistribution of melt by surface tension is likely to be the dominant process in small (~10 km radius) planetesimals in the absence of convection or impact-induced deformation. However, this redistribution process is sufficiently slow that large bodies of localized melt (magma chambers) are likely to develop. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this research, hydrodynamics of the Bubble Train Flows (BTF) in circular capillaries has been investigated by Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS).The Volume of Fluid Based (VOF) interface tracking method and streamwise direction periodic boundary conditions has been applied. The results show that there exists an appropriate agreement between DNS and experimental correlation results. The re...

Numerical Study of Flow and Heat Transfer in a Square Driven Cavity

A numerical approach called “SIMPLER” is used to investigate the  flow and heat transfer characteristics in a square driven cavity. The two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations were solved and the results are depicted as contour plots of stream function, vorticity, and total pressure for Reynolds numbers from 1 to 10000. At the higher values of Reynolds number, an inviscid core re...

Numerical Simulation of Flow Pattern around the Bridge Pier with Submerged Vanes

Bridges are very important for establishing communication paths. For this reason, it is important to control scour around bridge piers. Several methods have been proposed for scour control. One of the most useful methods is the use of submerged vanes. In the other hand, laboratory circumstances force many considered effective factors to be skipped in the scour phenomenon. In this situation, the...

Experimental and Numerical Study of Tension Bearing Capacity of Circular Skirted Foundations Resting on Sand Bed

Skirted foundations are an appropriate alternative to deep foundations in onshore and offshore structures, which have the ability to withstand uplift loads, are also easy to be installed. The tensile performance of skirted foundations on sand was studied by physical and numerical modeling. Laboratory tests were carried out on small-scale foundation models with peripheral skirts. Numerical model...

Experimental and numerical study of anomalous thermocapillary convection in liquid gallium

Thermocapillary Marangoni convection of liquid gallium was studied experimentally and numerically. A specially designed experimental setup ensured an oxide-free surface of the liquid gallium for a very long time. The convective flow at the free surface was found to be directed opposite to both buoyancy-driven and ordinary thermocapillary convection. The anomalous direction of the thermocapillar...
